“Behind the Lights,” the latest EP from up-and-coming trio Birds Over Arkansas, is the type of record that should get you excited. The four-track release serves as a perfect introduction to the music of Scott haskitt, Laura Hartshorn and John Mondick as they steadily build a following.

Birds Over Arkansas CDCiting influences as varied as Peter Gabriel, Frank Zappa, Pink Floyd and Yes, there’s a delightfully eclectic feeling to standout tunes “Comet,” “Catapult” and personal favorite “Lay Down Tonight.” Remaining tune “Elsa” isn’t quite as effective, but does nothing to diminish the overall effectiveness of the short-player.

If you like what you hear on “Behind the Lights” — and I can’t think why you wouldn’t — be sure to check out Birds Over Arkansas live at Pittsburgh’s Altar Bar on Saturday, Oct. 25, when they perform in support of headliner Carbon Leaf. It should be a terrific show. (Jeffrey Sisk)
