It’s good to be Billy Porter right now. The 44-year-old Pittsburgh native took home both a Tony and a Grammy in 2013 for his performance in “Kinky Boots,” and the musical’s original cast album, respectively. Striking while the iron is hot, the acclaimed singer/songwriter/composer/actor/playwright/director is dropping his first solo album in almost a decade.
“Billy’s Back on Broadway” finds Porter putting his spin on 10 well-known tunes from acclaimed musicals. Porter knocks it out of the park here and is especially effective on “Everything’s Coming Up Roses,” “Don’t Rain on My Parade,” “I’ve Gotta Be Me,” “Happy Days Are Here Again/Get Happy” (with Cyndi Lauper) and “I am Changing.” Yes, it’s good to be Billy Porter these days.
