Half sisters Martha Wainwright and Lucy Wainwright Roche have music in their blood. Their father is acclaimed songwriter Loudon Wainwright III, while Martha’s mother is renowned vocalist Kate McGarrigle and Lucy’s is Suzzy Roche.
Both have carved out respected solo careers over the past decade or so, and tey’ve joined forces for the first time as The Wainwright Sisters for debut long player “Songs in the Dark.” The 16-track, 50-minute slab features tunes that shaped their childhoods, many of them written by their parents and made famous by the likes of Jimmie Rodgers, Simon & Garfunkel and Woody Guthrie.
Among the highlights of “Songs in the Dark” are “Prairie Lullaby,” “El Condor Pasa,” “Lullaby for a Doll,” “Baby Rocking Medley,” “Screaming Issue,’ “Our Mother the Mountain,” “End of the Rainbow,” “All the Pretty Horses” and “Do You Love an Apple.” Good stuff. (Jeffrey Sisk)
