For “Love Saves the Day,” the 10th studio effort from Philadelphia natives G. Love & Special Sauce, the trio went back to their early days in an attempt to recapture the lively “trashcan blues” sound that they helped pioneer some 20 years ago. The result is the most enjoyable G. Love & Special Sauce platter in years.
In addition to working with his usual Special Sauce partners in crime — upright bassist James “Jimi Jazz” Prescott and drummer Jeffrey “The Houseman” Clemens — G. Love gets special contributions on the new record from the likes of David Hidalgo, Lucinda Williams, Citizen Cope, Ozimatli and DJ Logic.
The blues are flowing throughout the 12-track, 42-minute platter with a handful of winning entries that should appeal to G. Love & Special Sauce’s longtime fans. Keepers include the set-opening title track (featuring Hidalgo), “Dis Song,” a blistering rendition of Leadbelly’s “New York City” (with Williams), “Muse” (with Citizen Cope), “Pick Up the Phone” (with Kristy Lee) and “Lil’ Run Around.” Good stuff.
