Luke Temple impressed me thoroughly with his terrific 2009 self-titled debut album under the Here We Go Magic moniker. It’s a record I still revisit from time to time and find it to be a very enjoyable gathering of quirky indie pop tunes.
Here We Go Magic have continued to plug away in the years that followed and have released a pair of so-so records in 2010’s “Pigeons” and 2012’s “A Different Ship.” Unfortunately, neither of those offerings were particularly special and Here We Go Magic kind of faded into the background for me. Latest offering “Be Small” has put Temple & Co. right back onto my radar.
Though it still falls a notch below the band’s debut gem, Here We Go Magic shine on the 11-track, 42-minute platter. Temple remains the driving creative force and his songwriting here is as strong as it’s been in years. Among the standout cuts are “Stella” and the title track, “Girls in the Early Morning,” “Tokyo London US Korea” and set closer “Dancing World.” Hopefully this is the start of an exciting new chapter for this talented band.
