There’s no disputing the hard rock pedigree of The Winery Dogs. The band’s three members — Richie Kotzen (guitar/vocals), Mike Portnoy (drums), Billy Sheehan (bass) — have served time in Dream Theater, Avenged Sevenfold, Mr. Big and Poison, selling countless records along the way. The Dogs scored with their self-titled 2013 full-length debut and build on that foundation with sophomore slab “Hot Streak.”

Winery CD“I feel we’ve taken the band to another level,” Kotzen says of the 13-track, 66-minute new release. “The compositions are stronger on this album. I feel more connected lyrically and musically to what I did on this record than on the last one. We’ve widened the musical scope of the band on this record and moved it forward.”

While that may well be true, The Winery Dogs (thankfully) kept many of the elements that made their first record so enjoyable. You’ll find plenty of blistering guitar riffs and thumping bass lines, plus enough pulse-pounding drum work to please even the most jaded hard rock fans. Keepers include the opening tandem of “Oblivion” and “Captain Love,” along with “Empire,” “Ghost Town,” “War Machine,” “Devil You Know” and “The Lamb.” Rock on, fellas. (Jeffrey Sisk)
