Slayer’s best days are way, way behind them. There are many people who didn’t want the band to continue following the dismissal of drum god Dave Lombardo and the tragic death of guitarist Jeff Hanneman. But continue they did, and the result is their new album “Repentless.”
All that aside, the band’s 12th album isn’t a total loss by any means. There are some fine moments on this album, and despite missing key members (Exodus guitarist Gary Holt and drummer Paul Bostaph fill the missing roles), this isn’t a bad effort. It’s just not a great one.
The title track is plenty savage, “Piano Wire” (Hanneman has a writing credit here) is fine, and “Implode” is fiery as hell. It’s not the band’s best, but it’s a decent listen. (Brian Krasman)
