Aircraft, the Buffalo-based indie art rock outfit fronted by Justin John Smith, have built a solid regional following and shared the stage with indie stalwarts like Thee Oh Sees, Plants and Animals and Ty Segall. The quartet earned positive reviews for 2013’s “Sonic Boom” full-length debut and look to build on that momentum with “7 Gems From the Sparkling Void.”

Aircraft CDThe seven-track, 27-minute EP finds Smith & Co. (guitarist Ty Skelton, bassist James Warren and drummer Matt Cossman) clicking on all cylinders. Smith credits years of experimental drug use for helping him develop a unique take on songwriting and there are definite trippy overtones evident throughout “7 Gems From the Sparking Void.”

The one-two opening punch of “Space Euphoria” and set highlight “Dig” get things off to a fast start, and Aircraft further soar on “Stick,” “Camera Song” and “Sink or Swim.” Keep your eye on this up-and-coming young band. (Jeffrey Sisk)
