Cheyenne, Wyo. isn’t one of the first places you think of when it comes to high-octane rock music, but newcomers First Decree are doing their best to put The Equality State on the musical map. The four-piece band take a nice step in that direction with new long player “This Is Our Rise.”

First Decree CDFrontman Travis James is joined in the band by siblings Dane Lopez-Smith (guitar), Isaac Lopez-Smith (bass) and Zach Lopez-Smith (drums). They have been making music as First Decree since 2012, establishing their brand with extensive touring, an EP and 2013’s full-length debut “Set in Stone.”

The 13-track “This Is Our Rise” contains plenty of blistering guitar riffs, but, ironically, my favorite cuts are the set-closing acoustic versions of “Phoenix” and “Lost in the Crowd.” In both cases, the unplugged renditions surpass the originals and show some real promise. Other highlights include “Here We Go Again,” “Flash and Bone” and “Rain.” The future seems pretty bright for these guys. (Jeffrey Sisk)
