Stephen Kalinich and Jon Tiven have almost a century’s worth of combined experience as musicians and songwriters. Their songs have been performed by A-listers like The Beach Boys, Paul McCartney, B.B. King and Wilson Pickett, and they’ve performed with everyone from Alabama Shakes and Bettye LaVette to Big Star and Warpaint. Kalinich and Tiven wrote a jaw-dropping 700-plus songs in preparation for latest project “Each Soul Has a Voice,” though only 14 eventually made the cut.
“We write a song a day, generally speaking,” Tiven explains. “Stevie sends me a lyric and I either write something fresh or use a music track that I’ve managed to compose on a day off. And during this process we achieved a closeness as a team that you cannot get unless you write that many songs as a team. You put two semi-geniuses together and over time they can become one great mind.”
The songs here are rough around the edges and likely won’t be for all tastes, but there’s no denying that Kalinich and Tiven work very well together. Among the highlights on “Each Soul Has a Voice” are “Rude Awakenings,” “Usually,” “Explosions of Love,” “To Each and Every Soul,” “Only the Rare” and set closer “Overrated.” This one merits a few spins.
