Canadian collective Walk Off the Earth exploded into the mainstream in 2012 when their YouTube video of the band’s cover of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” with all five members simultaneously playing one guitar generated 70 million views in a matter of weeks. They proved to be more than a one-trick pony with 2013’s terrific major-label debut “R.E.V.O.” and are back again with “Sing It All Away.”
While there’s no disputing the talents of Sarah Blackwood, Gianni Luminati, Joel Cassady, Marshall and Taylor, this 12-track release is a notch below its predecessor. The songs remain catchy, energetic and radio-ready, but Walk Off the Earth don’t seem to be having quite as much fun this time around.
That said, the band’s legion of fans — affectionately dubbed Wotelings — should find plenty to like about “Sing It All Away.” Among the many keepers here are “Rule the World,” “I’ll Be Waiting,” “Boomerang,” “California Trees,” “We Got Love” and “Home We’ll Go (Take My Hand),” featuring acclaimed EDM artist Steve Aoki.
