Jazz fans figure to be lining up in droves — or at least they SHOULD be — to get a copy of “Feeling Good,” the North American debut from Barcelona-based prodigy Andrea Motis and her instructor/collaborator Joan Chamorro. It’s a fantastic record from a pair of international stars whose profile figures to rise dramatically in our country.
Motis began working with Chamorro’s Sant Andreu Jazz Band in 2007 when she was just 12 years old. Three years later she recorded an album of jazz standards and now looks to capture North America’s fancy with this impeccable 16-track slab. In addition to her vocal work, Motis, 20, struts her stuff on trumpet on a handful of tunes, while multi-instrumentalist Chamorro hits all the right notes on double bass and tenor saxophone.
There aren’t any missteps on the 62-minute release, but pay special attention to Chamorro & Motis’ renditions of the title track, “Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea,” “Moon River,” “Love Me or Leave Me,” “Hallelujah,” “My Funny Valentine” and “Sophisticated Lady.” I can’t wait to hear more.
