Good luck trying to narrow down the music of indie newcomers Laura & Greg into one (or even two) clear-cut genres. There’s so much going on throughout the duo’s charmingly eclectic “Forever for Sure” full-length debut, such a task will certainly prove fruitless. There are elements of country, pop, folk and garage rock on an 11-track release that has me eager to hear more from the harmonious twosome.
Laura O’Neill is a native of Melbourne, Australia, and moved to New York City in 2007, where she went on to open an artisan ice cream shop and later an Indonesian restaurant. Greg Yagolitzner was born in Moldava before immigrating to the United States with his parents at age 4. He dabbled in music while growing up in Philadelphia but came to the Big Apple a decade ago to study animation.
As fate would have it, Laura & Greg met a couple years ago at a Brooklyn eatery and immediately hit it off. A few days later they started the band. They lure the listener right in with the one-two opening punch of “Muscle Memory” and “Gravity (Shoulder)” and later deliver the goods on “Fireflies,” “Forever for Sure,” “Once Out Loud,” “Same World” and “Someone Like Me.” Good stuff.
