If you’re looking to take an adventure in your mind, you’d be doing yourself a huge favor by grabbing onto Colleen’s music and letting it sweep you away. That’s the moniker under which Cecile Schott has recorded for years, and her mesmerizing new record “Captain of None” is something that could lift you up and sweep you away.
The French musician can be labeled experimental easily, but don’t think that will hold you at arm’s length. There is a ton of humanity and atmosphere to her music, and “Captain” is chock full of dynamic moments, from the watery opener “Holding Horses”; to the slightly more traditional “I’m King” that finds her trying to make fire and succeeding; through “Salina Stars” that feels like fantasy music; to jazzy, sometimes rustic “Soul Alphabet” that keeps you floating along; to the inventive, life-bursting closing title cut, where Schott wonders, “What’s inside of me?”
It’s a great trip you’ll take, and don’t be surprised to want to take that journey with Colleen over and over again. (Brian Krasman)
