I can tell you without hesitation that you’ll be hard-pressed to find a record that’s more fun than “Citizen,” the latest effort from Alaska-based (seriously!) country outfit Todd Grebe & Cold Country. It’s a consistently excellent gathering of tunes that will leave a smile on your face all the while managing to tug at your heartstrings on occasion.
Tongue-in-cheek opener “Criminal Style” gets the record off to a dynamite start as Grebe professing a love so deep that he’d help the object of his affection hide the body if she up and killed someone. Now THAT’S love, y’all. Grebe also scores with “Box of Wine,” “More Than a Love Song,” “Ain’t That Fine,” “Nothing Left to Lose,” “Let’s Make Love for Christmas” and “You’ll Never Find Me” — though there really isn’t a bad song in the entire twnagy bunch.
Grebe is the straw that stirs the drink, but he gets plenty of help from wife/fiddle player Angela Oudean, guitarist Nathan May, bassist Mike Bub and drummer Larry Atamanuik. Modern honky-tonk country doesn’t get much better than this. (Jeffrey Sisk)
