Danish indie rockers Mew return with rollicking “+-” release

Mew (Play It Again Sam)
3.5 stars out of 5

Having long been stars in their native Denmark, indie outfit Mew emerged in the United States about a decade ago with a handful of first-rate albums culminating in rock-solid “best of” collection “Eggs Are Funny” in 2010. Jonas Bjerre, Bo Madsen, Johan Wohlert and Silas Utke Graae Jorgensen have been on an extended hiatus but at long last return with a new studio album in “+-” (pronounced “plus-minus”).

Mew CDAs was the case with their last studio effort, 2009’s ridiculously titled “No More Stories Are Told Today, I’m Sorry They Washed Away/No More Stories, the World Is Grey, I’m Tired, Let’s Wash Away,” have crafted another ridiculously catchy collection of tunes.

The first three cuts on “+-“ — “Satellites,” Witness” and “The Night Believer” — are as good as anything Mew have recorded to date, and after a misfire with overlong and under-tempo “Making Friends,” the lads bounce back with keepers that include “My Complications,’ “Waterslides,” the 10-minute opus “Rows” and “Cross the River on Your Own.” Welcome back, guys.
