The hushed, sublime “Darling Arithmetic” is my inaugural voyage into the world of Irish indie folk artist Conor O’Brien — aka Villagers. But after repeated spins of the phenomenal nine-track platter, you better believe I’ll be tracking down copies of 2010 debut “Becoming a Jackal”and 2013 release “{Awayland}.”

Villagers CDThough not a household name in the United States, Villagers have built an impressive resume over the past few years. O’Brien is an award-winning songwriter and has shared the stage with the likes of Neil Young and indie darlings Fleet Foxes and Grizzly Bear.

There isn’t a bad song to be found on the quietly reflective 36-minute “Darling Arithmetic,” with Villagers soaring highest on “Courage,” “Everything I am Is Yours,” “Hot Scary Summer,” the title track,” “No One to Blame” and “So Naïve.” It’s high time American audiences got to know this talented Irishman, whose music deserves to be heard by as many people as possible.
