British musician Oli Bayston earned his stripes as an engineer/producer/songwriter for several indie and electropop bands in recent years, not to mention a stint in unheralded indie outfit Keith. Latest project Boxed In, however, figures to be the one that puts him on the map. The trio’s self-titled debut is a synth-fueled delight and is sure to set your toes to tapping.
“After Keith, my intention was to start something fresh and get a new project going,” says Bayston (keyboards/vocals), whose joined in Boxed In by Mark Nicholls (bass) and Liam Hutton (drums). “My intention was always to become a producer as well as an artist in my own right, and it’s worked out really well for me. It helped me hone a very specific sound.”
That sound is epitomized by a handful of tunes on the 11-track release. Dynamic opener “Mystery” sets the tone, and Boxed also impress with “All Your Love Is Gone,” “Sailing,” “Foot of the Hill,” “Run Quicker” and slow-burn closer “Wild West.” The future appears very bright for Bayston & Co.
