After not hearing from Canadian instrumental collective Godspeed You! Black Emperor when they delivered their fourth record in 2012, we have a great new album from the band just three years later. “Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress” continues their line of odd album titles and also hammers and sways you in a way only GY!BE can.

GY!BE coverAt four tracks and a little over 40 minutes, it’s a nicely sized serving and one that will serve the band’s longtime fans quite well. The group continues to create mind-bending, emotionally inspiring tracks that would have any movie crowd bawling with tears if they
soundtracked a film.

From great, mystical opener “Peasantry or ‘Light! Inside of Light!” through the shorter middle cuts, all the way to climaxing finish “Piss Crowns Are Trebled,” the band takes you on breathtaking highs and crushing lows, layering sound on top of sound and creating a textured, organic bloodletting that makes you feel every ounce of their movement. This band remains the gods of post-rock, cinematic wonders, and this record proves that time and time again. (Brian Krasman)
