Ironically enough, I first heard Richard Shindell and Lucy Kaplansky in 2007 as both contemporary folk crooners released stellar solo albums. I still revisit Shindell’s “South of Delia” and Kaplansky’s “Over the Hills” on occasion and was thrilled to discover they’ve teamed up with Grammy winner Larry Campbell to form The Pine Hill Project.

The Pine Hill Project CDDebut album “Tomorrow You’re Going” is comprised of 11 of Shindell and Kaplansky’s favorite tunes and The Pine Hill Project does them justice.

“We were brainstorming songs we love,” Kaplansky explains. “We each brought some to the table. But we both had to really love a song in order for it to make the cut. We sat around and played all the songs and figured out which ones really worked.”

Whether tackling Gillian Welch’s “Wichita,” “Nick Lowe’s “I Live on a Battlefield,” U2’s “Sweetest Thing” or Little Feat’s “Missing You,” The Pine Hill Project puts its own stamp on just about every track. I hope we won’t have to wait too long for album No. 2. (Jeffrey Sisk)
