Pop superstar Lady Gaga paid tribute to “The Sound of Music” during the Academy Awards last month, earning (generally) favorable reviews for her extended medley of tunes from the iconic musical marking its 50th anniversary this year. The celebration of the Rodgers & Hammerstein classic continues with the release of an expanded reissue of the soundtrack album.
“The music and lyrics of Rodgers & Hammerstein connect seamlessly,” star Julie Andrews writes in brand new liner notes for the album. “Singing those beautiful songs was a joyous experience for me, and one that I will never forget. ‘The Sound of Music’ has become a film classic, and I feel truly blessed to have been a part of it.”
The 27-track, 74-minute album includes previously unreleased orchestral cues from the Oscar-winning score and all vocal performances on one CD for the first time. Filled with songs that have withstood the test of time — “The Sound of Music,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen,” “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Edelweiss,” “So Long, Farewell,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” — this is an essential addition to the collection of anyone who loves musicals.
