4 stars out of 5

If you’ve yet to hear of Los Angeles-based guitar-and-drums garage duo Gal Pals, you might want to check out their terrific “Velvet Rut” debut. I see big things in store for Jillian Talley (drums) and Lauren Mikus (guitar), who figure to make a splash this month at the annual South By Southwest music conference in Austin, Texas.

Gal Pals CDGal Pals already have earned comparisons to the likes of Vivian Girls and The Donnas, and peers such as Kate Nash, The Black Lips, The Spits and Ringo Deathstarr also have delivered glowing endorsements of Talley and Mikus.

There’s little wasted energy on the 11-track, 28-minute “Velvet Rut,” as Gal Pals roll through one standout tune after another. There aren’t any misfires to be found here, but pay extra attention of “Get Over It,” “Here’s to the Girls,” “Earthquake,” “Dumbhead,” “Punisher” and “For Our Sake.” Beat all your friends to the punch by discovering this fantastic band BEFORE they hit it big.
