Best known as the guitarist for Afro-beat revivalist outfit NOMO, Erik Hall has quietly set up doing stellar work with side project In Tall Buildings in recent years. Adopting a lower key, psych-folk vibe for ITB, Hall impressed with his self-titled debut in 2010 and takes things up another level with “Driver.”
There’s a strain of melancholy woven throughout the 10-track release, but the occasionally buoyant melodies and mix of styles keep In Tall Buildings interesting. Lead single “Flare Gun” is a delight, and has earned Hall deserved kudos from critics and fans alike, but for my money set opener “Bawl Cry Wail” is the standout tune here.
A tad too inconsistent to make it an essential purchase for your collection, “Driver” certainly merits your attention. In addition to the aforementioned keepers, In Tall Buildings soar on “All You Pine,” “Unmistakable,” “I’ll Be Up Soon” and “When You See Me Fall.” Looking forward to hearing more. (Jeffrey Sisk)
