When a new band earns comparisons to a host of my current favorites — The Avett Brothers, Fleet Foxes, Manchester Orchestra, Band of Horses, The Morning Benders, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes — you better believe my interest is piqued.
Such is the case for Philadelphia-based indie folk quintet Seagulls, who are generating a ton of positive buzz in the wake of terrific debut album “Great Pine.” Filled with ear-pleasing vocals harmonies and lush string arrangements, the 10-track release is nothing short of fantastic.
From scene-setting instrumental opener “Dragoon” to the surf-tinged gem “You and Me” to additional keepers “Love, Give,” “Thirteen,” the title track and set closer “Distracted,” Seagulls soar high throughout the too-short 29-minute release. Can’t wait to hear more from this talented young band. (Jeffrey Sisk)
