Following in the footsteps of outlaw country pioneers like Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Hank Williams Jr. and Johnny Paycheck, Michigan-based outfit Whitey Morgan & The 78’s have been keeping the honky-tonk spirit alive and well.

Whitey CDThe band has a pair of flat-out awesome studio albums on their resume — 2008’s “Honky Tonks and Cheap Motels” debut and 2010’s self-titled gem — and they offer a glimpse of their dynamic stage show on latest release “Born, Raise & Live From Flint.”

The 13-track release features songs from WM78’s first two albums, highlighted by Flint ode “Buick City,” “Turn Up the Bottle,” “Cheatin’ Again,” “Another Round” and “Honky Tonk Queen.” There are also kick-ass covers of Paycheck (“Cocaine Train”), Johnny Cash (“Bad News”), Bruce Springsteen (“I’m on Fire”) and Dale Watson (“Where Do You Want It?”). Enjoy, y’all. (Jeffrey Sisk)
