Des Moines, Iowa, probably isn’t a city that comes to mind when you think of first-rate soul music, but Dustin Smith and his talented bandmates in The Maytags are doing their best to put their hometown on the musical map. The sextet’s remarkable debut EP “Nova” is nothing short of fantastic and if the six-track release is any indication, the sky’s the limit for The Maytags.
“Soul musicians, they can talk about Sunday dinner in the middle of summer or a heartbreaking love song and either way it is a very natural style of music,” Smith explains. “There’s no way you can lie with it.”
After spending a few years as a solo performer and fronting nine-member collective The Sunday Silos, Smith has refined his sound and love of soul music with The Maytags. From the opening notes of “Blind” clear through to the final strains of “Birthday Song,” there isn’t a misstep to be found on “Nova.” Additional keepers include “I Got No Reasons,” personal favorite “Cassius” and “Keep On.”
