We’re less than a month away from the release of the revamped film adaptation of beloved Broadway musical “Annie” and I still can’t get a good read on the movie. I have a feeling that this updated version — with Jamie Foxx and Quvenzhane Wallis in the leads, joined by Cameron Diaz, Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale — will either be terrific or a misfire for the ages.
After several spins of the film’s original soundtrack, however, I am leaning more toward the former. There’s a pep in the familiar tunes (“It’s the Hard-Knock Life,” “Tomorrow,” “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile,” “Maybe,” “Little Girls”) and a handful of new songs (“Opportunity,” “Who Am I,” “Moonquake Lake,” “The City’s Yours”) that breathe new life into a familiar tale.
We will have to wait a few more weeks for a verdict on the Will Gluck-directed film, but the soundtrack will warm you up on these cold wintry nights. (Jeffrey Sisk)
