I’ve long been a sucker for first-rate Christmas albums and thanks to acclaimed bluegrass duo The Roys, there’s another holiday platter that figures to remain in my yuletide rotation for the foreseeable future. “Bluegrass Kinda Christmas” is the latest effort from siblings Eliane and Lee Roy, and it’s a twangy delight from beginning to end.
“My memories of Christmas are so vivid,” Elaine Roy says. “But most importantly, I think, was the complete sense of being loved that I felt at those family gatherings.” Adds her brother: “The title track is actually the first Christmas sonf Elaine and I’ve written. We wrote it with our buddy Steve Dean, and it’s full of the energy and excitement I remember from being a kid.”
The best song on the 10-track, 30-minute release is opener “Santa Looked a Lot Like Daddy,” written by Buck Owens and Don Rich, and The Roys also score with renditions of Dolly Parton’s “With Bells On,” Merle Haggard’s “If We Make It Through December” and holiday standards “Winter Wonderland” and “O Holy Night.” Happy holidays, y’all.
