Indie folk/pop newcomers Oh, Cassius! are a duo to keep your eye on. John Torres and Meredith DiMenna make a wonderful first impression on debut EP “On Such a Full Sea Are We Now Afloat,” a delightful release that has earned them comparisons to none other than legendary tandem Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris.
Oh, Cassius! are based in Connecticut and first started generating online buzz with their acoustic covers of pop hits by the likes of One Direction, MGMT, Macklemore and Rihanna. But where Torres and DiMenna really shine is on their original compositions as they work the boy-girl singing dynamic to perfection.
The seven-track “On Such a Full Sea Are We Now Afloat” gets off to a so-so start with “I Can’t Win,” but Oh, Cassius! soon find their groove with a series of keepers in “Lesser of Two,” lead single “Carpenter,” “Pollyanna in the House of the Devil,” “Irish Goodbye” (with Mates of State) and set closer “Feathered Bones.” Here’s hoping we won’t have to wait too long for their full-length debut.
