With her ear-pleasing blend of indie pop and alternative country twang, singer/songwriter Deena Shoshkes has a winner on her hands in latest album “Rock River.” Deena burst onto the scene in the early 1980s as a co-founder of indie pop outfit The Cucumbers and has continued to make quality music ever since. In addition to her solo work under the Deena moniker, Shoshkes gigs as RockDownBaby (lo-fi dance pop) and Over the Moon (children-oriented rock). Basically, she’s a pretty busy lady.
“Rock River” is the follow-up to 2008’s “Somewhere in Blue” and finds Deena on top of her game. There’s isn’t a bad song to be found on the 12-track release, with Deena especially effective on “My Own Advice,” “All She Wrote,” “I Will Never Be Your Valentine,” “Always Tomorrow” and “When I Fall.” Good stuff.
