Pittsburgh folk duo the Squirrel Hillbillies impressed on their self-titled debut album a couple years ago and partners Jenny Wolsk Bain and Gary Crouth take things up a notch on enjoyable sophomore set “Goody Shoes.”

Squirrel CDThe Hillbillies honed their chops performing live at the Three Rivers Arts Festival,  Pittsburgh International Children’s Festival and assorted Calliope” Pittsburgh’s Folk Music Society gigs and it shows on this 12-track release.

There isn’t a bad song to be found among the dozen original compositions, with Bain and Crouth soaring especially high on “I Can,” the bluesy title track, “Cowboy Song,” “Bless You Man,” “Jitney” and “Whisk You Away.” The Squirrell Hillbillies are doing the Burgh proud. (Jeffrey Sisk)
